SUMMARY:Canceled - Free Society event featuring David Nekrutman
DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled due to the speaker returning to Israel early. \nHLGU’s next Free Society event will feature David Nekrutman on Wednesday\, March 20 at 3 pm in The Loft inside the Foster Student Center. David will be speaking and answering questions on what is going on in Israel. This event is free and open to the public. \nDavid Nekrutman is the Executive Director for The Isaiah Projects\, a ministry dedicated to creating resources that  empowers Christians to discover the Hebraic roots of their faith as well as provide humanitarian aid to single Ethiopian mothers and Christian Arab families living in Israel. In April of 2023\, he launched Biblical Excavations creating the first ever Bible curriculum that fuses critical thinking and Hebraic understanding for the home-school high school community. \nFor his contribution in advancing the relationship between Jews and Christians\, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Department of World Religions has recognized David Nekrutman as a Goodwill Ambassador of Jewish-Christian Relations for the State of Israel. Besides graduating from Oral Roberts University in 2018 with a Masters in Biblical Literature and authoring Your Sabbath Invitation\, David Nekrutman was recently selected for The Chosen Season 4’s Jewish Advisory Board.

SUMMARY:NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines Talk
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal-LaGrange University will welcome Riley Gaines as a guest speaker on January 31\, 2024 at 6:00 pm in the Roland Fine Arts Center.\n\nThe event is free and open to the public\, however tickets do need to be secured through www.hlg.edu/free-society. The tickets are free except there is a handling fee through the ticket website. For group tickets\, call 573.629.3260 or email FreeSociety@hlg.edu.\n\nThis event is part of the Free Society Speaker Series that HLGU hosts in partnership with the Moorman Foundation.\n\nRiley Gaines is a leader defending women’s single-sex spaces\, advocating for equality and fairness\, and standing up for women’s safety\, privacy\, and equal opportunities.\n\nGaines graduated from the University of Kentucky\, where she was a 12x All-American swimmer.\n\nRiley has made waves for speaking out after tying UPenn’s Lia Thomas\, a biological male swimmer on the women’s team\, at the 2022 NCAA Division 1 Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships.\n\nAfter Riley directly experienced competing against a man in women’s sports\, being forced without warning or consent to undress before the fully intact male\, and subjected to discrimination by the NCAA\, she became one of the most powerful voices to speak out against the injustice\, challenging the rules of the NCAA\, USA Swimming\, International Olympic Committee (IOC)\, and other governing bodies.\n\nRiley now works for the leading women’s organization making real and lasting change\, legally defining ‘woman\,’ protecting Title IX\, and defending women’s rights to single-sex spaces and equal opportunities. She has traveled the country speaking and has testified before the U.S. Senate\, U.S. House\, and countless state legislatures.\n\n“HLGU is grateful and excited for the opportunity to host Riley Gaines on campus as part of our Free Society Speaker Series. Her commitment and quest to save women’s sports from the growing threat of individuals and entities within our culture who are determined to deconstruct gender is admirable.” says Dr. Eric Turner\, Christian Studies Division Chair at HLGU.\n\nGaines currently works for the Riley Gaines Foundation through the Leadership Institute which empowers and equips individuals to stand up for what is right. Gaines also speaks on laws concerning Title IX to keep biological women in women’s sports. She has given her testimony before the U.S. Senate\, U.S. House\, and multiple state legislatures.\n\n“We believe that her cause is shared and accentuated by HLGU’s core value of promoting a biblical worldview. For us\, this event is an honor to host but also an important one for communicating and contributing our voice to this critical cause.” says Turner.\n\nFor more information about this event and the Free Society Speaker Series at HLGU\, email FreeSociety@hlg.edu or call 573.629.3260.

SUMMARY:Arbor Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal-LaGrange University will hold its annual Arbor Day celebration on Friday\, April 30\, at 10 a.m. just behind the Roland Library. HLGU has been named a Tree Campus Higher Education institution for 2020\, the eighth year in a row that HLGU has earned this designation. \nAt this celebration\, HLGU will be honoring Robert O. and the late Burlene Parker\, Betty Jo Cunningham Takahashi ’59\, and Al Stubbings by planting trees and installing benches in the area. \n“We are pleased to again be named a Tree Campus Higher Education institution\,” said HLGU president Dr. Anthony Allen. “This designation reflects our desire to have an attractive campus that has representative species of every tree indigenous to northeast Missouri. Our continued efforts to beautify our campus is an investment in the future\, and represents our commitment to help provide a healthy environment for our community.” \nTree Campus Higher Education is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and to engage staff and students in conservation goals. Hannibal-LaGrange University achieved this title by meeting recognition standards including student service-learning projects. \nFor more information on the Arbor Day Celebration\, or how to become a supporter of HLGU’s tree campaign\, contact Dr. Ray Carty at 573-629-3094\, or via email at rcarty@hlg.edu. \nHannibal-LaGrange University is a four-year Christian university fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The University prides itself in the traditional and nontraditional educational experience it offers in a distinctively Christian environment.
