Student – Building Monitor

Job Description

The role of the building monitor for the Department of Public Safety intertwines with campus safety overall. The monitor is in charge of one (1) building on campus for the designated hours. While in charge of the building, the monitor is entrusted with general rule enforcement, safety and security checks, minor clean-up, and sometimes closing the building. The monitor is answerable to the Public Safety Officer on duty at the time.

Duties

The position includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Arriving to designated building on time and remaining there for assigned shift
  • Making rounds at a minimum of every hour thoroughly checking all floors
  • Logging activity in the Duty Log-the time of each security round as well as the activity on each floor need to be documented (i.e. windows shut, turned off light, people on other floor, noting any problems found, etc.)
  • Assist students with needs
  • Enforcing building rules (IE: informing, requesting compliance, being firm when needed or calling for assistance from the Public Safety Officer on duty)
  • If you cannot fulfil your shift, it is your responsibility to find a replacement and notify your supervisor of the change so the master schedule can be updated.
  • Considered a Campus Security Authority (CSA)

Building Keys

Working for the Department of Public Safety is a very important position. As a student worker, you may be assigned a Master key to your designated building.  Naturally, a large amount of responsibilities come with the key.  It is of the utmost importance that the key be used properly to aid in the completion of duties. The key is not to be used for any personal gain of any sort.  Failure to use the key properly will result in, but no limited to: revocation of keys, instant termination from position, appropriate disciplinary action in accordance to the Hannibal-LaGrange University Handbook, and/or any civil or criminal penalties.  Any lost/stolen keys or security passes will be reported to a supervisor immediately.

Discipline

The position of building monitor requires a high level of self-discipline. The position is a paid position (not volunteer) and as such should be treated with the respect of a paid position. Persons failing to fulfill their responsibilities will be warned and/or relieved of duty. Two unexcused absences will result in a warnings and later absences will result in dismissal. Being late for duty can be excused if it is as a result of academic conflicts. These should be avoided if possible.  If you are late, you will ONLY record the time you worked on your time sheets. Any false information on a time sheet can be considered stealing and will be dealt with accordingly.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A building monitor should have good interpersonal skills as they will interact with others regularly
  • Requires physical activities the involve walking, lifting and stairs
  • Must have values consistent with the mission and purpose of Hannibal-LaGrange University
  • Must have fluent use of the English language to communicate with others
