HLGU Admissions Representative Jacob Weir was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army National Guard on September 12. The ceremony was held in the Missouri State Capitol Rotunda.
Weir graduated from Hannibal-LaGrange University in May 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a minor in criminal justice. He decided that if presented with the opportunity to serve in the military he would, and when the good opportunity arose that June, he accepted.
Weir attended basic training in October 2013, and in March 2014, he started the 18-month officer candidate school, which ended in September with his commissioning.
Now, Weir will be taking some time off from his position at HLGU to attend a five-month basic officer leadership course, which begins in February, where he will receive training for the engineer branch he has chosen.
“Both Dr. Summerlin and the business office have been very helpful in helping me prepare,” said Weir. “They’ve been very supportive.”
“As a retired Naval officer and chaplain, I am extremely proud of Jake’s accomplishments,” said Dr. Summerlin, vice president for enrollment management. “Very few people earn the privilege to be a commissioned officer in our military or guard. Second Lieutenant Weir’s commission is a reflection of his character, his leadership potential, and his commitment to sacrificially serve others.”
Dr. Summerlin is honored to have attended Second Lieutenant Weir’s commissioning and believes it speaks of Weir’s commitment to HLGU.
“Jake’s commitment to Hannibal-LaGrange University is reflective of the same values encouraged through military service. Jake will continue to serve our Lord, our country, our state, and Hannibal-LaGrange University with honor, courage, and commitment.”
