Michelle Gibson ’10 M ’19
Compliance Manager at A.T. Still University in Kirksville, MO
Bachelor of Science in Christian Education, MAL

Please describe your position and what you enjoy most about it.
While the title of compliance manager might sound boring, it is not! I have the opportunity to partner with each area of the university and assist with compliance with various laws and regulations. I love working on projects and problem-solving how ATSU can continually improve!
What aspects of your HLGU experience helped you prepare for your career?
Being at HLGU, both as a student and an employee, helped me to gain knowledge and experience with working with groups to come other for a common goal…
What have you enjoyed most about your career?
I enjoy being able to work on a variety of projects that deal with different areas and problem-solving how to improve systems and processes. It is rewarding to build a system or process and see it work effectively in implementation.
Have you or are you currently continuing your education? If so, please list the institution(s) and degree(s) you earned or are working toward.
At the end of the summer, I will be taking a certification test to become a Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP).
How did HLGU shape you as a person?
I learned so much during my time at HLGU! I was challenged to deepen my walk with Christ and to walk with other believers. Intellectually, I grew my ability to learn and synthesize information and apply it to a situation, process, or problem. I learned to work in groups of people who wanted different outcomes and find a way to move forward with a comprise that works for all parties.
What HLGU professors played a part in your success? How did your relationship with faculty help you succeed?
The wonderful thing about attending a smaller university is that you have the opportunity to really get to know both faculty and staff. These relationships enhanced my educational experience and helped me to grow as a person. I was blessed to sit under the teaching of Dr. Bergen, Dr. Brown, Dr. Pelltier, and Dr. Morgan.
Do you have any tips to share with students interested in this field?
Be a lifelong learner, no matter the job you hold or where you go. Engage and learn! Read widely and listen to podcasts and lectures that are outside of your field. Challenge yourself to learn new information and skills, then apply what you have learned!
What are some of your favorite HLGU memories?
I loved going to midnight breakfasts and having my friends literally right down that hall, and worshiping in chapel together.
What on-campus activities were you involved in at HLGU?
I helped a lot with student activities and precipitated in Cru.
HLGU’s motto is “knowledge for service.” What roles have these values played in your life?
I love to learn new things! One of my goals in life is to be a lifelong learner. Knowledge gives you the power to make informed and wise decisions. To know when you need to ask for help or seek counsel. Knowledge allows you to connect with and learn from others. It allows you to know what you believe and why.
What is one thing you know now that you wish you’d known when you started in the field?
I don’t know anything I wish I had known before starting in this field. But I have been challenged to learn a lot of new things! The skills of learning to do quality research have definitely come in handy!
