Acquiring Textbooks

Book Vouchers

If you have received financial aid and/or scholarships that exceed the cost of tuition and this balance is still in your HLGU account, you can use these funds to purchase textbooks through a book voucher. You can request a book voucher using the link below:

Important notes:

  • Book vouchers can only be completed during the beginning of the semester, so make sure to request books for terms that start mid-semester (online Fall C and Spring C courses) or during off-terms (summer and winter courses).
  • The approval process can take a few days, so make sure to submit requests early.

Textbook Purchases/Rentals

HLGU is committed to helping you acquire your textbooks in the most economical manner possible, which is why we do not require you to purchase them from a certain vendor. We recommend the following steps for acquiring your textbooks:

  1. Check the HLGU library for eBooks, local copies, or request them through inter-library loan. This option might not work for the primary textbook, but might be ideal for a text used for only a few weeks during the course.
  2. Review the rental and purchasing cost of the textbooks.
    • Check providers that link multiple book vendors, such as Amazon, and Bookscouter.
    • Check independent book providers such as Half-Price Books and Abe Books.
    • Check the publisher of the book (Cengage, Pearson, McGraw-Hill, etc.)
  3. Factoring in shipping costs and time, purchase/rent your textbooks from the providers that provide the lowest cost.

Important considerations:

  • Make sure to purchase the specific ISBN provided for the textbook to ensure you have the correct edition and any online access required for the course.
  • Review the shipping location of textbooks to make sure they will arrive in time.
  • The sooner you order your textbooks, the better prices you will be able to find.
  • Consider textbook buyback options.
