Graduates of Hannibal-LaGrange University’s Teacher Education Program have received local, state, and national recognition for their contributions to the teaching profession.
Perhaps no other field has the potential to make such a lasting, positive change on the world than does teaching. It is our goal to ensure that program graduates have a broad general education, a firm grounding in professional education, and a strong competency in the area of specialization as they begin their journey to become reflective decision-makers and to use knowledge for service.
Online education classes start several times a year and are usually eight weeks in length. Practical field work can be completed in an appropriately accredited school near you. If you are a student who is currently gaining experience in the field of education, you may be able to gain credit for that experience in our Pathways to Proficiency program. The bachelor of science in education is offered as a fully online or degree completion program. Learn from teachers who have years of experience in your desired field while completing practical field work toward teaching certification. Whether you have no college credit or want to transfer in, there are multiple options for you.

Teaching & Learning + Initial (Alternative) Certification
If you have a bachelor’s degree in any field of study from an appropriately accredited institution and you long to become a certified teacher, this program is for you. This track emphasizes elements of effective curricular/instructional planning and assessment to enhance student learning. It is intended for those who want to study principles of effective instruction.
Initial (Alternative) Certification Paths
- Master of Science in Teaching & Learning + Initial Certification-For students who have a bachelor’s degree in any field of study from an appropriately accredited institution.
- Missouri Temporary Authorization Certification (TAC)-For Non-Degree seeking students who have entered into an agreement with their school of record.
- TAC + Master of Science in Education Teaching & Learning-For TAC students who wish to seek a degree while earning their TAC certification.
- Pathways to Proficiency: Count your career towards your coursework. Continue earning your current salary while you earn your degree by earning Credit for Prior Learning for your experience as a paraprofessional, teacher assistant, or teacher of record. Many students are eligible for advanced standing, able to count certain undergraduate courses toward their master’s degree

Teaching & Learning Track
This track is intended for those who want to study principles of effective instruction and emphasizes elements of effective curricular/instructional planning and assessment to enhance student learning. It is intended for those who want to study principles of effective instruction. Students who choose this route also get a jumpstart on classes toward and MEd.
Special Reading Track
This track emphasizes the research-based components of effective reading instruction and assessment (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing). It is intended for those who have early childhood, elementary, or secondary teacher certification and want to study the science of special reading K-12. Additional certification for Missouri is available upon completion of two practicums. Practicums can be completed in a school near you.
MEd Administration
Master of Education Administration
Complete your MEd in as little as 12 months. Hone your management and leadership skills required in the Kindergarten through 12th grade academic setting as you study ethics and integrity, class action research and assessment, curriculum and instruction creation and management, school supervision, school business management and facilities, school law, and revision of a school improvement plan.
This program is designed for the working adult in the field of education. To be eligible for principalship in the state of Missouri, a student must have taught for 3 years.

Depending on which track you choose, a degree in education may lead to a career as an Early Childhood Teacher, Elementary Teacher, Middle, School Teacher, Secondary Teacher, Special Education Teacher, Title I Reading Teacher, Principal, Special Education Director, or Curriculum Developer.
