Registration for HLGU’s Master of Arts in Leadership and Master of Science in Education programs is now open. The deadline to apply and submit all paperwork is January 8, 2016. Classes begin January 18.

HLGU’s MAL is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and the Missouri Department of Higher Education, and can be completed entirely online in just one year. Students will be able to choose between two tracks, organizational management and Christian ministry.
HLGU’s Master of Leadership in Organizational Management track is geared toward anyone desiring to further their education and their career in the area of leadership.
“This is a very versatile degree,” stated Dr. Ray Carty, vice president of institutional effectiveness. “It is perfect for those who already have a degree in business but also for those who have found themselves in a leadership role and may not have a business degree.”
HLGU’s Master of Leadership in Christian Ministry has been designed to meet the growing need of ministry leaders seeking specialized training in the area of Christian discipleship. Courses provide students with an excellent understanding of biblical leadership principles while also teaching about the business aspects of running a church and keeping the doors open.
“Leadership is comprised of many components; however four seem to be most relevant: integrity, influence, inward strength, and ingenuity. While some individuals possess interpersonal skills that lend themselves to leadership, leadership skills can be learned and can be enhanced, thus the purpose of our program,” said Carty.
HLGU’s MSE program, now fully online, offers tracks of study in special reading K-12, teaching and learning, and teaching and learning with an initial teaching certification.
“Our new MSE curriculum is designed to provide a program for professional growth for elementary and secondary teachers holding current teacher certification,” stated Dr. Jill Arnold, graduate and online division director.
Additionally, students who have an accredited bachelor’s degree in art, biology, business, English, mathematics, music, physical education/recreation management, social studies/history, unified science, or related fields can also benefit from the teaching and learning with initial teaching certification track. Students in this program are eligible for initial Missouri teaching certification, and can earn their master’s degree at the same time!
The teaching and learning track emphasizes elements of effective curricular/instructional planning and assessment to enhance student learning. It is intended for those who have early childhood, elementary, or secondary teacher certification and want to study principles of effective instruction.
The special reading K-12 track emphasizes the research-based components of effective reading instruction and assessment (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing). It is intended for those who have early childhood, elementary, or secondary teacher certification and want to study the science of special reading K-12. Students who complete the 36-hour program are eligible to apply to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for additional Special Reading K-12 certification. Many school districts in Missouri employ Special Reading K-12 teachers as Title I reading teachers.
