HLGU Communication Students Win in National Competition

Students in the Communication Studies department at Hannibal-LaGrange University earned multiple awards in the Baptist Communicators Association (BCA) competition. The BCA student awards were announced on October 17. Hannibal-LaGrange University students earned a first and third place finish in the video promotion category. Students also earned two second place finishes in the categories of public relations campaign and video broadcast.

“It is so exciting for our students to receive national recognition for their work. It’s a real joy to watch students use their gifts and talents to help a nonprofit tell their story. The communication studies curriculum is full of opportunities to create content for nonprofit organizations in our community. In many of our courses, students learn how to tell those stories through podcasts, video production projects, traditional journalism stories, or social media content. HLGU students love to partner with real organizations doing great work in our community,” said Assistant Communications Professor, Christy Jung.

The work that placed in the BCA competition included two video promos for St. John’s Lutheran school. It also included a public relations campaign called #HeyGetToKnowHays benefitting HAYS (Hannibal Alliance for Youth Success). The final entry that placed was for News Beat, HLGU’s student produced news segment.

There were 121 entries in the BCA competition. The schools in the organization are faith-based schools and include schools such as Baylor University, California Baptist University, Union University, Samford University, and Hannibal-LaGrange University. BCA members volunteered their time to serve as judges across seven divisions, assessing each entry carefully and providing valuable and constructive feedback to each student. This is the second year HLGU has participated in the contest.
