Director of Online Studies

Position Title: Director of Online Studies 

Department: Academic Affairs 

Reports To: Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) 

Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt 

Position Overview: 

Hannibal-LaGrange University seeks a dynamic and experienced individual to serve as  the Director of Online Studies. The Director will be responsible for overseeing the university’s  online academic programs, ensuring their growth, quality, and alignment with the university’s  strategic goals. This position requires a strong leader with expertise in online education,  instructional design, faculty development, and student success. The Director will work closely  with academic departments to ensure that online courses meet high standards of academic  excellence and provide an exceptional learning experience for students. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  1. Leadership and Management
  • Lead and oversee the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of  online programs at Hannibal-LaGrange University. 
  • Provide strategic direction for online learning initiatives, including program  expansion, delivery methods, and technological infrastructure. 
  • Develop and maintain effective communication and collaboration with faculty,  staff, and administration regarding online program development and delivery. o Work closely with the VPAA and academic departments to integrate online  learning strategies into the broader academic mission of the university. 
  1. Program Development and Improvement
  • Oversee the design, development, and continuous improvement of online courses  and programs. 
  • Collaborate with faculty and instructional designers to ensure the quality, rigor,  and alignment of online courses with program objectives and accreditation  standards. 
  • Conduct regular assessments and evaluations of online programs to identify areas  for improvement and implement best practices for online learning. 
  1. Faculty Support and Development
  • Provide leadership in the recruitment, training, and ongoing professional  development of faculty teaching in online formats. 
  • Offer resources and support for faculty in the design and delivery of online  courses, including guidance on instructional technologies, student engagement  strategies, and best practices for online teaching. 
  • Promote a collaborative, supportive environment for faculty as they integrate  technology into their teaching.
  1. Student Support and Engagement
  • Ensure that online students have access to the resources, support, and services  they need to succeed academically, including advising, tutoring, library services,  and technical support. 
  • Collaborate with the Office of Student Affairs to enhance student engagement and  retention in online programs. 
  • Oversee the development and implementation of student orientation programs  specific to online learners. 
  1. Technology and Innovation
  • Stay informed of emerging trends and technologies in online education and  incorporate innovative solutions into the university’s online offerings. 
  • Manage and optimize the Learning Management System (LMS) and other  instructional technologies to ensure effective course delivery and user experience. o Coordinate with the Office of Computer Services (OCS) department to address  any technical issues related to online learning platforms and ensure the seamless  operation of online courses. 
  1. Accreditation and Compliance
  • Ensure that online programs comply with relevant accreditation standards and  regulations, including those set by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and  other accrediting bodies. 
  • Prepare reports and documentation related to online programs for accreditation  reviews and institutional assessments. 
  1. Data and Reporting
  • Collect and analyze data related to online program enrollment, student  performance, and faculty effectiveness. 
  • Provide regular reports to the VPAA and other university leadership regarding  online program performance, growth, and areas for improvement. 

Qualifications: 

  • Education: A Master’s degree is required. A Doctoral degree in a relevant field is  preferred. 

Experience

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in higher education, with a focus on online  education and program management. 
  • Proven experience in managing online learning platforms, instructional design,  and faculty development. 
  • Experience with accreditation processes and compliance in the context of online  education. 

Skills

  • Strong understanding of Canvas, the University’s Learning Management Systems. o Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administration. o Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities. 
  • Knowledge of best practices in online pedagogy and student engagement  strategies.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience in the development of fully online degree programs and courses. Familiarity with instructional design principles and tools. 
  • Experience with data analysis and reporting related to student success and program  performance. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods of time. Occasional travel may be required for professional development or conferences.
