Cameron Moeller
Cyber Defense Analyst at RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, CA
Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems

Please describe your position and what you enjoy most about it.
In my current position, I monitor the RAND network for attacks, malicious software, intrusions, and at times perform Incident Response actions and coordinate remediation of infected systems. I enjoy my current position because of the unpredictability of each work day. Every day I have the opportunity of doing a different task. I also enjoy the constant reading and learning that I must do to keep up with cyber threat intelligence.
What aspects of your HLGU experience helped you prepare for your career?
An aspect of HLGU that helped prepare me for my career was the wide range of IT subjects that I was able to learn while completing my CIS degree. Even though I currently work in Information Security, I am able to continually use my knowledge of networks, databases, web development, etc. This additional knowledge gives me more opportunities to contribute and be a more effective member of my team. Another aspect of HLGU that prepared me for my career was the encouragement by professors to self educate. The information technology field is always changing and the ability to stay on top of it is very important.
How did HLGU shape you as a person?
HLGU helped me grow spiritually as well as helping me become a more independent and mature person.
Please list any scholarships, honors, or awards you received as an undergraduate or graduate.
At HLGU, I was fortunately able to receive academic scholarships, athletic scholarships, and multiple Dean’s List honors.
Do you have any tips to share with students interested in this field?
Never stop learning and investing in yourself. The technology world will never stop progressing, so anyone going into this field will have to keep advancing their knowledge in order to keep contributing.
What on-campus activities were you involved in at HLGU?
I was a part of the Men’s Volleyball team for three years.
What is one thing you know now that you wish you’d known when you started in the field?
Don’t be afraid to network and ask people for advice. I believe that networking is an extremely important part of every career. I believe that connecting with as many people as you can is an invaluable asset that will help you further your career and help achieve your goals.
